Remedies for Common Cold

If you have been consistently getting the sniffles, you may have already caught the common cold. According to the CDC, adults are expected to have at least two to three colds a year. But no matter how common this illness is, there is still no known cure for it. There are only some cold remedies you can try to help ease your symptoms. We list down some of our tried and test home remedies to help you feel better while nursing away your sniffles for days or even weeks.

Stay Hydrated

It is easy to get dehydrated when you have the common cold. That is why it is important to stick to the recommended six to eight glasses of water a day. This can help keep your skin moisturized and makes mucus easier to clear. If you want variety, you can opt for other fluids such as natural fruit juice, clear broth or warm lemon water with honey that can also help loosen congestion. Stay clear of caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, especially during the first few days of your cold, as they can cause dehydration.

Take a Rest

When you catch the common cold, this usually means that your immune system is not as strong as it should be. The best way to recharge your body is by taking a good, long sleep. Since the first few days of having a cold are known to be contagious, take these days as an opportunity to allow your body to rest. Avoid common stressors and focus on getting better. Get at least seven to eight hours of sleep and feel better in the morning.

Relieve Stuffiness & Congestion

If you are feeling stuffy or congested, try an over-the-counter saline nasal drops or spray to relieve congestion. These drops or sprays are known to soften mucus so they can drain easily. You may also want to try adding moisture to your indoor air by using a cool mist vaporizer or humidifier. This can help loosen congestion and keep your skin moisturized as well.

These are just some cold remedies you can try for your cold. If your symptoms, however, are becoming severe and include high fever or chills, you may already be suffering from flu and it may be best to visit your doctor for medication.
